 Every summer, I watch things grow in my garden.  I know what normal growth looks like, and what stunted or abnormal growth is and what to do about it.  But for us to grow spiritually, what does it mean?  It is not as easyas looking to see if my plants are droopy from lack of water, or leaves yellow or pock-marked from some disease or pest. What exactly is spiritual growth, and how do we do it?

Mother’s day is once again just around the corner.  This is the day where we fail miserably to adequately appreciate our moms for all of their love and care for us.  It’s not that we don’t try. We simply are not equipped to express all our love for them on one day.  Hopefully though, we do better than these three guys.

On the week before we celebrated the Lord’s resurrection, my family went to see the movie Risen.  It is a fabulous movie, and I highly recommend it.  The story follows the journey of a Roman soldier as he tries to understand the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.  I was impacted on many levels, but there was one aspect of the movie which touched me in a way that was completely unexpected.  I was moved by how the disciples of Jesus loved each other.

As we draw close to the time we celebrate our Lord’s resurrection, it is a good time to do some personal reflection. Even when our external activities and actions are the same, the condition of our heart may have undergone changes while we weren’t looking. If so, we may be guilty of going through the motions in our relationship with the Lord. It is easy for our hearts to become hardened or to grow cold. In the last days Jesus warned that “because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12)
